Definitive Orthodontic Treatment for Patients with TMD

Abstract

The recent way of life and social stress can activate latent Temporomandibular Joint problems which is a severe physiological disease which affects and deteriorates the quality of life of many patients and has been increasing among our patients due to the different stressful situations. During more than half a century there has been controversy among general dentists, prosthodontists, orthognathic surgeons, and orthodontists on how to diagnose and treat TMD problems. This means that we have many different concepts in dentistry on how the TMD problems must be diagnosed and approached. Some TMJ concepts and treatments are obsolete and only give a temporary solution to this very complex craniomandibular syndrome.

Some invasive surgical treatments are performed, but many of them give a temporary or provisional solution to this complicated problem.

An evidence based “definite and non-invasive therapy” with orthodontic treatment has been performed for the last 15 years. A definitive treatment to the patients that suffer this severe disease is provided so that, after this treatment the patients "do not need or have to use "an occlusal splint as a lifelong device”.

Biography

Dr Mauricio Gonzalez Balut is an Assistant Professor of Advanced Education in Orthodontics and Dentofacial Orthopedics of Loma Linda University, School of Dentistry. He completed his DDS in the Intercontinental University, Mexico City in 1994, and Master of Science in Orthodontics in the Loma Linda University in 1998. Dr Balut is the Creator and Developer of the “Pro-Torque” and ABP, Aesthetic Borderline Prescription” brackets manufactured by American Orthodontics, as well as the Orthodontic Mini-Implant, Temporary Anchorage Device, OMG from Zircon Prior Implants of Ukraine. Dr. Balut was the President of the Mexican Association of Orthodontics from 2015-2018, President of the Mexico City Association of Orthodontists and Dentofacial Orthopedics from 2013-2015, Member of the Advisory Board of the Mexican Board of Orthodontists from 2009-2018 and the Chairman of the Scientific Committee of the Mexican Association of Orthodontics from 2000-2008. He also gave numerous amount of lectures domestically and in worldwide.
