CBCT – Impact, Limitations and Possibilities in Dental Medicine

The proposed course will cover the principles of use and interpretation of advanced imaging modalities across the major disciplines in dental medicine. It will present and critically discuss current guidelines, limitations, and potential future developments in Dento-Maxillofacial Radiology (DMFR) for CBCT imaging, including issues of correct interpretation and professional reporting. Oral Radiology is a fundamental diagnostic tool for most disciplines in dental medicine. Disciplines such as operative dentistry, pediatric dentistry, orthodontics, periodontology, oral implantology, and oral surgery use radiographic imaging modalities daily to achieve accurate diagnoses and as a basis for treatment planning, as well as for follow-up and monitoring of outcomes. Hence, the proposed course will be relevant for dental professionals worldwide, providing an opportunity to learn from renowned experts in their respective fields about the daily use of CBCT, its limitations, and potential future applications. Dental caries is the most prevalent oral disease in children worldwide. It severely compromises the quality of life of children and their families. The cost of treating dental caries and its complications place a heavy financial burden on individuals, families and society. Minimal intervention dentistry (MID) is a philosophy of care that aims to conserve tooth tissues throughout a person’s life. It is an effective treatment approach with increasing acceptance among dental professionals. The MID management approach is highly applicable to child patients as it is friendly, reduces patient anxiety, improves patient behaviors and offers health-oriented treatment options. This MOOC will present the rationale and application of MID for preventing and managing dental caries in children, using evidence-based information whenever available.

This course enables dental practitioners to apply the concept of prevention and management of dental caries in the child patients by caries risk assessment. It will cover the basic principles in the early detection and control of the dental caries process. The course will describe the methods for remineralization of non-cavitated lesions as well as the different options for conservative management of enamel and dentine carious lesions using minimally invasive techniques. The final part of the module will address the implementation of MID concept and treatments in the general dental practice.

This course will cover the basic principles of usage and interpretation of radiographic imaging modalities in two and three dimensions for diagnostic imaging of the dento-maxillofacial region, covering the major disciplines in dental medicine. Current guidelines, consensus, limitations, and potential future developments in dento-maxillofacial radiology (DMFR) for extra- and intraoral imaging modalities will be presented and critically discussed, including the issues related to radiation dose protection. The present MOOC has been designed to improve foundation knowledge but also to promote higher-order thinking skills such as collaboration, critical thinking, and problem-solving for experienced clinicians in various fields of dental medicine. Equipped with commercial-grade video production equipment such as the latest 4K mirrorless cameras and a range of prime and zoom lenses, as well as a teleprompter and proper audio recording devices, we provide pre to post-production services including creative direction, technical set up, offline and online editing, audio mastering, 2D motion graphics and transitions, as well as virtual screen keying. Live streaming is also supported in the studio.
