Dental Materials Science
Biomaterials and Your Health

Good health is important to all of us! The development of novel biomaterials and biotechnologies not only help to treat diseases, but they also improve our quality of lives. Do you know what the implication of fibre reinforced composites in the health care industry is? How do nanoneedles and biomineralization help to diagnose and treat diseases? Biomaterials research today is an exciting and intensive multidisciplinary area that encompasses contributions from a wide range of disciplinary areas, from clinical medicine to biology, chemistry, physics, material science, and engineering.

In this 4-Week-4-Module course, Biomaterials and Your Health, you will learn from a dynamic team of 25 dental practitioners and researchers across 10 dental specialties around the world, led by HKU’s Prof Jukka Matinlinna and Dr James K.H. Tsoi. You will learn about the special properties of biomedical materials in oral health care and be introduced to cutting-edge technologies such as nanoneedle in oral cancer and the crucial roles of digital dentistry in contemporary oral health care.

Furthermore, clinicians and scientists in different parts of the world will share with you their innovative research and findings, among them are potential and new biomaterials applications in oral health care.

Oral Health Care for Autistic Children

Recent studies indicate that the prevalence rate of Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD) has risen dramatically over the past decades and a likely trend of continual global surge in autistic child patients.

Children with ASD have oral sensitivities and daily oral hygiene management could be difficult. In caring for autistic children, it is essential to understand the unique behaviors and other possible comorbid conditions and in particular, to gain the confidence and cooperation of the patient before carrying out a specific oral procedure to ensure satisfactory outcome.

In this course, you will learn the ways to establish trust with children and parents in a dental visit. You will be introduced to effective methods to stimulate positive attitudes and behaviors towards oral health care and application of minimally invasive clinical therapies from evidence-based research and best practises.

Led by Dr. Mattheos, this MOOC is taught by a dream-team of more than 20 international experts in Implant Dentistry. Each week offers specialized knowledge, presents evidence-based clinical procedures and actual patient cases for learners to engage with.

The MOOC includes 5 modules and runs over a period of 5 weeks. The journey of Implant Dentistry begins by exploring how discoveries in biology and technological developments led to the current practice of dental implants. Then, clinical cases are examined, patients’ needs and expectations are diagnosed while students gradually learn the principles of treatment planning. The current surgical procedures for placing implants and various restorative techniques are taught step-by-step , directed by current evidence and best practices. Finally, major threats and complications of implant procedures are investigate, while also discussing ways to ensure successful treatments and long serving implants.
