Periodontal Considerations for Treatment of Older Adults

Abstract

With the ageing population in Hong Kong and the increase in oral health awareness, the need for dental treatment has been increasing in the age group of older adults. Especially when now periodontal health is linked to systemic health and overall well-being of the quality of life in the older adults, more and more patients of this age group would be seeking treatment from us. As a result, quite often dentists would face the challenge of managing medically compromised older adults which require periodontal treatment. Throughout this seminar, Dr. Tsang will outline the important aspects in general assessment, periodontal assessment and management with related clinical cases. There will also be discussion in specific issues related to the management of older adults. Participants are expected to gain more insights from a periodontist’s perspective when managing patients in this age group after the seminar.

Oral Health Care in Older Adults

Abstract

The older adult population is increasing in number and proportion worldwide and locally. Hong Kong will have one third of the population being 65 or above and be the city with highest proportion of older adults in the world by 2050. Age changes, chronic medical conditions and polypharmacy make older adults more susceptible to oral diseases. With their declined physical and cognitive function on aging, older adults may have difficulties in performing daily oral hygiene care or even in tolerating dental treatment. The treatment philosophy and approach for general population may not be suitable for this special age group. During this seminar, Dr. Chan will illustrate the treatment philosophy and considerations for oral health care in older adults. She will also update the current recommendations on the management of oral diseases in older adults.
